GENERATIVE ENGINE EXPERTS

Real Depth in Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization is the work of getting your brand named inside the synthesized answers AI search engines hand to users. It depends on entity authority and a consistent pattern of credible sources. If your brand is missing from those answers, the fix lives in the work we do here.

GEO with a published methodology

Built on Authority Engineering, the framework Adam Chronister published in his 2026 book.

Tracked across all major generative engines

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude.

Real consensus building

Original research, expert positioning, digital PR, and brand mention reclamation, not just schema audits.

Entity-first work

Knowledge Graph, structured data, sameAs links, and topical entity coverage so AI systems recognize your brand at the knowledge graph level.

Foundational SEO underneath

Technical SEO and content depth come first. GEO sits on top of strong SEO foundations.

Open monthly reporting

A monthly AI visibility check on the questions your buyers ask, across all five generative engines.

What Generative Engine Optimization Is

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of getting your brand named inside the generated answers that AI search engines deliver to users. The user types a question, the system returns a synthesized answer that names two or three companies, and either your brand is one of them or it is not.

Adam Chronister, our founder, on the shift: “One of the very first things you see at the top of the fold is AI overviews. Everything else gets pushed down, even Google Ads. Your traditional organic results are completely below the fold.”

The user behavior change is real. Buyers used to type “best SEO agency Spokane” and scan ten links. Now many of them type “I’m looking for an SEO agency in Spokane that specializes in local SEO for healthcare practices, with case studies, and a budget under $5,000 per month” and read the AI’s two-paragraph answer. Adam: “A long tail keyword used to be considered like ‘plumber near me.’ Now using LLM systems, we might type ‘I’m looking for a plumber near me, based in Seattle, Washington, who is an expert in A, B and C, whose price point is between X and Y.’ The consumer is being trained because of the way these systems work to search more in depth.

GEO is the work that gets your brand into those answers.

The Consensus Signal: Why Traditional SEO Tactics Stop Producing AI Visibility

Generative engines do not pick the brand at the top of a results list. They do something closer to what a human research analyst does: scan a body of credible sources, find brands that multiple sources independently associate with the topic, and name the ones with the strongest pattern of agreement.

Adam, from Authority Engineering: “When an AI system generates a response, it isn’t pulling from a single optimized page. It’s analyzing patterns across thousands of sources simultaneously, looking for brands, experts, and organizations that multiple independent, credible sources consistently recognize as authoritative. It’s looking for agreement.

The mechanism is consensus. A brand referenced by industry publications, expert podcasts, professional communities, and independent reviews is a brand the system can confidently put in the answer. A brand that exists only on its own website is a single source making a single claim about itself. AI systems treat that as insufficient evidence.

Adam: “LLMs don’t use backlinks, for the most part. It’s usually consensus. Can I see a wide consensus of information that can be correlated and validated across data points? And then if so, I’m more likely to present that in search.

GEO is the workstream that produces that consensus pattern.

"When an AI system is deciding what to say about my category, why would it name my company instead of my competitors? That question changes almost everything."

What GEO Includes

Entity authority and knowledge graph work

Generative engines work on entities, not strings. We audit your current entity coverage (Knowledge Graph presence, schema markup, Wikidata, sameAs links, business profile consistency), close the gaps, and connect your brand to the topics you want to own at the knowledge graph level. This is the structured-data layer that makes the rest of the GEO work readable.

Structured content for citation extraction

Generative engines extract specific snippets from pages and credit them to the source. Content that is structured for extraction, clear question-and-answer blocks, defined terms, original statistics, named frameworks, gets cited far more often than the same information buried in long flowing paragraphs. We rebuild key pages on your site for citation extraction, then add the schema that tells the AI what each block actually is.

Original research and reference content

The fastest path to citation is publishing data and frameworks other people cite. We design and run original surveys, build category-defining frameworks, publish original benchmarks, and write the long-form reference content that becomes the source other publishers point to. Once a piece becomes the canonical reference for a topic, generative engines cite it for years.

Digital PR and brand mention building

Most of the consensus signal does not get built on your own website. We run digital PR, expert positioning, podcast outreach, and contributed content campaigns so independent credible sources reference your brand in connection with the topics you want to own. Adam, from his book: “Authority cannot live only on the platform you control. A brand visible exclusively on its own website presents a single-source signal. AI systems and human audiences alike interpret this as self-reported credibility.”

Schema markup and technical foundations

Schema markup tells search and AI systems explicitly what each page is about: Service, FAQPage, Article, Organization, Person, HowTo, Product, Review. We deploy a complete schema layer across your site, validate it, and connect it to the entity authority work. Technical SEO basics (crawlability, site speed, mobile rendering, indexation) get fixed before the schema layer goes on top.

Brand mention reclamation

A surprising share of brand mentions across the open web are uncredited (no link, no schema, no entity ID). We find the unlinked mentions, reach out for proper attribution where appropriate, and add structured data to your own site that makes the connection explicit. Reclaimed mentions add to the consensus signal without new outreach.

Generative engine visibility tracking

We track which questions your brand appears in across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Claude. The monthly tracking is the diagnostic that tells us which workstream to push next.

Our Process

How We Run a GEO Engagement

Here is the step-by-step engagement we run for every GEO client, from the opening AI visibility audit through the entity and authority work that gets a brand named inside generated answers.

1

AI visibility audit

We open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Claude and ask the questions a real customer would ask in your category. We log every brand named, every source cited, the language used, and the gaps. The audit is the diagnostic that drives the rest of the program.

2

Entity and consensus mapping

We map your current entity coverage and audit your brand’s presence across the open web. Where do you appear? Where do competitors appear that you do not? Which credible sources are citing your category but not citing you? The output is a written gap analysis with the specific work to do.

3

Strategy

A 12-month GEO plan covering the workstreams above, sequenced so the foundation work happens before the consensus-building work, because consensus signals built on a weak foundation do not stick.

4

Execution

Schema deployment, content rebuild for citation extraction, original research, digital PR campaigns, and brand mention work. Each workstream has a delivery cadence and an owner inside our team.

5

Measurement

Monthly AI visibility report across the five major generative engines, plus traditional organic performance underneath. The metric is name-drops in answers your buyers actually ask, not a vendor-reported visibility score.

Our Process

Why Choose Enleaf for GEO

Most businesses that reach us have already tried a generic agency or a one-off entity cleanup elsewhere and watched the AI answers stay unchanged. The teams who move their GEO work to Enleaf tend to cite the same handful of reasons.

Methodology that has been published in book form.

Adam Chronister published “Authority Engineering: How to Become the Brand AI Recommends” in 2026. The book is the GEO playbook our team runs, and the underlying mechanism (consensus across credible sources) is what generative engines actually score. Most agencies are still running the schema-and-prompts playbook from a Twitter thread. We have spent years building this method.

Real digital PR muscle, not just schema work.

Most “GEO services” in the market are an entity audit plus a schema deck. That is not a program. The work that actually moves AI visibility is independent third-party validation, which means digital PR, expert positioning, original research, and brand mention building. We do that work because we have run it for SEO clients since 2009.

Foundations first, then GEO.

If your traditional SEO is broken, the GEO work cannot stick. We tell you that on the first call instead of selling you a GEO retainer that floats on top of a cracked foundation.

FAQs

GEO FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often on strategy calls.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO targets a position on a search engine results page. GEO targets inclusion in a generated answer. SEO measures rank and click-through; GEO measures whether your brand is named when a user asks a category question of an AI system. Both pull from the same body of web content, but they reward different signals: SEO weighs page-level relevance and links, GEO weighs entity-level authority and consensus across credible sources. The two run together in our programs.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the broader category: visibility inside the answers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and Claude generate. AEO (answer engine optimization) is more specific: structuring content for direct-answer surfaces (featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews specifically), question-and-answer formatting, and voice assistant queries. AEO is one of the tactical disciplines inside a GEO program. We treat them as overlapping, not identical.

How long does GEO take to produce results?

How long does GEO take to produce results?

Faster than most people assume. Adam Chronister’s own test-bed work showed an AI’s confidence threshold shift from “insufficient information” to verified legitimacy after a single credible-seeming press release. Sustained category visibility takes longer: a typical client starts seeing brand mentions appear in AI answers around month three, with the program compounding through months six to twelve.

Which AI systems does GEO target?

Which AI systems does GEO target?

The five we measure on every program: ChatGPT (and ChatGPT search), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews (Gemini-powered), Gemini standalone, and Claude. Each system uses a different blend of training data and live retrieval, but the core signal they score (consensus across credible sources) is the same. Visibility on one system tends to correlate with visibility on the others as the program matures.

Do I need GEO if my organic SEO is already strong?

Do I need GEO if my organic SEO is already strong?

Probably yes. Strong organic SEO does not automatically translate to strong AI visibility. AI systems weight entity authority, brand mentions across third-party sources, and structured content in ways that traditional SEO did not. We have audited plenty of clients who rank well on Google but are absent from AI answers because their authority lives almost entirely on their own site. The GEO program closes that gap.

How much does a GEO program cost?

How much does a GEO program cost?

Cost depends on your category, the size of the visibility gap, and whether traditional SEO and PR are bundled in. The work that actually moves AI visibility, digital PR, original research, and content rebuild, takes a real investment, so we do not run thin entity-tagging packages. On the first call we scope the program to your starting point and give you a specific number.

Will GEO traffic show up in Google Analytics?

Will GEO traffic show up in Google Analytics?

Partially. Some referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini show up as direct or referral traffic in GA4. Others arrive after the user has already decided to visit you because the AI named you. The tell that GEO is working is usually a quality lift, not a traffic spike. Adam, on the pattern: “Even though the quantity of traffic seems in aggregate to be decreasing, the quality for a lot of verticals is actually going up. You have a more definitive definition of what you’re looking for, you spend less time and have more of that buyer intent built in.”
