AI SEO Tools: The Stack We Run for Clients (and What You Should Know)

Enleaf is an AI SEO agency, and our clients regularly ask which AI SEO tools we actually use, which ones are worth a marketer’s own money, and which ones are mostly marketing decks dressed up as software. This page is the working answer. It covers AI visibility tracking, brand mention monitoring, schema and structured-data tools, entity research, content built for AI extraction, and the traditional SEO tools we run alongside the AI-specific stack. We use these tools as part of full AI SEO programs. We also recommend a smaller list to in-house marketing teams who want to handle the work themselves.

TOOLS WE ACTUALLY USE

A Practical Look at the Best AI SEO Tools

This is our working stack for AI SEO: the visibility trackers, mention monitors, schema tools, and entity research that tell us whether a brand is showing up in AI answers and where the gaps are. If you are picking AI SEO tools and second-guessing the list, the fix lives in the work we do here.

Tools we actually pay for

Honest list, not a paid placement page.

Featured in the Wall Street Journal for early AI tool work

Adam Chronister was profiled by WSJ for using AI content tooling before it was a category.

Tools split into two camps

“Tools you’ll buy” if you DIY, “tools we use as your agency.”

AI visibility tracking across all major engines

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Claude.

Foundational SEO stack stays

Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Ahrefs, SEMrush, Screaming Frog all still earn their spot.

11 Pillars

How We Think About AI SEO Tools

Most “AI SEO tool” lists online are SEO blog posts written for affiliate revenue. Most of them recommend the same eight tools regardless of whether those tools actually do the job. We try to be more honest.

Adam Chronister, our founder, was featured in a Wall Street Journal article for using AI content tooling before AI content was a category. His take: “Our team has been using AI content for a long time and not hiding it. I was featured in a Wall Street Journal article because at the time we were using another AI tool, which at that time was relatively new in the category.

What we have learned from that long runway: most marketers do not need a 15-tool AI SEO stack. They need three or four tools they actually run weekly, plus an agency or in-house person who knows what to do with the data. The tool list below is grouped by job to be done, not by vendor.

AI Visibility Tracking Tools

These are the tools that tell you whether your brand is appearing in AI answers. None of them are perfect. The category is new and the data sources keep shifting. We use a small set together to triangulate the truth.

Profound

Profound tracks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI surfaces, with prompt-level reporting, share-of-voice metrics, and competitor comparisons. The dashboard is the cleanest in the category and the underlying methodology is solid. Pricier than most. Worth it for clients in competitive categories.

Otterly.AI

Otterly.AI tracks AI search visibility and brand mentions across the major generative engines. The interface is friendlier for in-house marketers who want their own dashboard without a steep learning curve. Smaller prompt sets than Profound. Good entry point.

AthenaHQ

Pinned posts work like the top section of a homepage. We pin the post that delivers your highest-priority message (current promo, hero product, lead magnet, new launch) and rotate it on a quarterly cadence. The Featured tab is used for evergreen reference content (founding story, top product highlights, recent press) that you want a new visitor to see immediately.

ZipTie

ZipTie tracks AI Overviews and ChatGPT recommendations specifically, with a focus on prompt simulation and citation tracking. Useful as a sanity check against the broader trackers.

Peec.AI

Peec.AI is an AI search visibility tracker with a good free tier for marketers who want to start measuring before committing budget.

How we use these as your agency

We do not pick one. We run two or three together because no single tool covers every prompt and every engine accurately. The triangulation gives us a more honest picture than any single dashboard does.

Brand Mention Monitoring

Brand mentions are the consensus signal AI systems read at scale. Tracking them is half the work; building more of them is the other half.

Brand24

Brand24 monitors brand mentions across the open web (news, blogs, forums, social, podcasts via transcript indexing). Strong for catching mentions that have not been linked back to your site, which is the raw material for brand mention reclamation work.

Mention

Mention is the older alternative to Brand24, with broader social media coverage and weaker depth on news and forums. Pick one, not both.

Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar (in the broader Ahrefs suite) tracks unlinked brand mentions across Ahrefs’s index of the web. Built in to a tool most SEO teams already pay for.

Google Alerts

Free, less complete than the paid options, but a useful fallback if your budget is tight. Decent for catching new mentions on high-authority publications.

Schema and Structured Data Tools

Schema markup is what tells search and AI systems explicitly what each page is about. The category is mature and the tools are mostly free.

Schema.org

The official documentation. Read it before paying for any schema generator. Most pages need a smaller schema set than tools sell you on.

Google Rich Results Test

Google’s official validator for schema markup. Free. Use it before deploying schema to production.

Schema App

Paid schema management for larger sites that need to deploy and maintain schema across many pages and many content types. Worth the cost for enterprise content sites.

Merkle Schema Markup Generator

Free generator that produces clean JSON-LD for the most common schema types. Solid starting point.

Entity Research and Knowledge Graph Tools

Generative engines work on entities, not strings. Entity coverage is the hidden layer behind AI visibility.

Google Knowledge Graph Search API

The official Knowledge Graph API. Useful for checking whether your brand is recognized as an entity and what topics it is associated with.

Wikipedia and Wikidata

If your business genuinely qualifies for Wikipedia (independent third-party coverage in credible publications), a Wikipedia article with a Wikidata entity is one of the cleanest entity signals you can produce. Pay-to-play Wikipedia pages get deleted within weeks. Do not bother.

Diffbot Knowledge Graph

A commercial alternative knowledge graph used by some AI training pipelines. Useful for cross-checking entity coverage outside of Google’s graph.

Inlinks

Entity-based SEO software that maps your site’s entity coverage and identifies gaps. We use it on larger projects to plan entity-content roadmaps.

Content Tools for AI SEO

These are the tools we use to plan, write, and structure content that AI systems will actually cite.

Surfer SEO

Surfer scores content against the top-ranking pages in your category, gives you a target keyword and entity list per page, and helps structure content for both traditional SEO and AI extraction. We use Surfer on every content engagement.

MarketMuse

MarketMuse builds topic models that show how deeply a site covers a subject area. Useful for planning topical authority work that earns AI citations.

Frase

Frase combines keyword research, content briefs, and an AI writing assistant in one workflow. Lighter than Surfer or MarketMuse on entity coverage, faster on the content brief side.

Custom GPTs and prompt simulators

We run custom GPTs for prompt simulation: feed a buyer-question library through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini at scale and log which brands get named. The data drives the GEO program.

Traditional SEO Tools That Still Matter

AI SEO sits on top of strong SEO foundations. The traditional toolkit has not gone away.

Google Search Console

Free, official, the source of truth for how Google sees your site. Every program starts here.

Google Analytics 4

Traffic, behavior, conversions. Imperfect for AI referral tracking, still required.

Ahrefs

Backlinks, keyword research, site audits, brand mentions, and the backbone tool we run for most SEO programs.

SEMrush

Alternative to Ahrefs with stronger paid-search and keyword-research features. Pick one of the two as your primary, not both.

Screaming Frog

Site crawler. Free up to 500 URLs. The tool we use for technical SEO audits and entity coverage checks across a full site.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing data, plus the integration that feeds ChatGPT search.

"When an AI system is deciding what to say about my category, why would it name my company instead of my competitors? That question changes almost everything."

Tools

Tools You Should Buy vs. Tools We Run For You

If you are an in-house marketer trying to do AI SEO yourself, the realistic kit is:

If you are an in-house marketer trying to do AI SEO yourself, the realistic kit is:
  • Google Search Console (free)
  • One of: Ahrefs OR SEMrush
  • One AI visibility tracker: Otterly.AI or Peec.AI as the entry point
  • Brand24 for brand mention monitoring
  • Surfer SEO for content briefs
That is enough to run a credible in-house AI SEO program for a small to mid-size business.

If you hire an agency like Enleaf, the additional tools we layer on are:

  • Profound for deeper AI visibility tracking
  • MarketMuse or Inlinks for entity and topic modeling
  • Custom GPTs and prompt simulators for category-specific buyer-question testing
  • Schema App on larger sites with complex content
  • Internal scripts and dashboards that consolidate the above into a monthly client report

You do not need all of those tools to get visibility in AI search. You need the right strategy and consistent execution. Adam: “We’ve built some custom forecasting processes where we can take somebody in a particular market and give them at least a general indication of what SEO could do from not only a traffic perspective, but from a financial perspective.” Tools are the execution layer, not the strategy layer.

Our Process

Your First 60 Days With Enleaf

Spokane engagements tend to move at the same predictable pace. Here is what the first two months look like.

1

Strategy Call

A 30-minute call with one of our strategists, usually in our Spokane office or over video. We review your current site, traffic, Google Business Profile, and competitors before the meeting so we arrive with questions, not a generic pitch deck.

2

Audit & Benchmark

Over the next two weeks we run a full audit: technical SEO, keyword rankings, paid ad history, content gaps, and a competitive picture of the Spokane market. You receive a written report with prioritized fixes.

3

Custom digital marketing strategy

We build a plan sized to your budget and business today, with phased deliverables across 90-day sprints. Nothing we propose is boilerplate.

4

Production

Content creation, page builds, ppc campaigns, social posts, email campaigns, local SEO work, and link acquisition, whatever the plan calls for. Our internal production team handles it.

5

Report & Iterate

Monthly reporting against the metrics we agreed on up front, and quarterly strategy resets to adjust based on what is working.

How Enleaf Uses AI SEO Tools in a Client Engagement

Here is how these AI SEO tools come together inside a real client engagement, from the audit phase through ongoing tracking, so the stack does actual work rather than sitting idle.

Audit phase.

We run a full AI visibility audit using two trackers in parallel, plus manual prompt testing in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and Claude. Brand mention scan via Brand24 and Ahrefs. Entity coverage check using the Knowledge Graph API and Inlinks. Schema audit using Google’s validator and Screaming Frog.

Strategy phase.

Topic modeling with MarketMuse to identify the gaps between your current authority and category competitors. Buyer-question library built and tested with custom GPTs to find the prompts you should be appearing in but are not.

Execution phase.

Content built using Surfer briefs and structured for citation extraction. Schema deployed via Schema App on larger sites. Brand mention work powered by Brand24 alerts and Ahrefs Brand Radar. Digital PR pitches tracked in our internal CRM.

Reporting phase.

Monthly client report combining Profound or Otterly.AI tracking, Search Console organic data, GA4 traffic and conversions, and a manual prompt-test sample on the questions that matter most for that client’s revenue.

Most teams we work with have already bought two or three AI SEO tools elsewhere and still cannot tell whether their brand is gaining ground in the answers. The ones who bring the stack to Enleaf tend to cite the same handful of reasons.

FAQs

AI SEO Tools FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often on strategy calls.

Do I need to buy multiple AI visibility trackers?

Do I need to buy multiple AI visibility trackers?

If you are running AI SEO yourself, one is enough to start (Otterly.AI or Peec.AI is a reasonable entry point). If you are running a serious AI SEO program, two trackers in parallel is the minimum because no single tool covers every prompt and every engine accurately. We run two or three for every paid client.

Are free AI SEO tools any good?

Are free AI SEO tools any good?

Some, yes. Google Search Console, the Knowledge Graph API, Schema.org, the Rich Results Test, Wikidata, and ChatGPT or Gemini themselves (used as prompt simulators) are all free and genuinely useful. Most “free AI SEO tools” advertised on SEO blogs are paid tools with a 14-day trial. Read the pricing page before signing up.

Will an AI SEO tool replace a strategy?

Will an AI SEO tool replace a strategy?

No. Tools surface data. They do not decide which buyer questions to win, which content to invest in, which publications to pitch, or which entities to claim. Adam: “A lot of business owners are using the spaghetti method. They’re just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. We tell our clients: no, you need to let the data dictate your decisions.” The data comes from the tools. The decisions still need a human or an agency.

Should I cancel my Ahrefs or SEMrush subscription now that AI SEO exists?

Should I cancel my Ahrefs or SEMrush subscription now that AI SEO exists?

No. Traditional SEO tools are still required. AI systems pull from the same web traditional search engines crawl. Backlink data, keyword research, and competitor SEO analysis still inform the AI SEO program directly. The traditional stack stays; the AI stack layers on top.

What does an AI SEO tool stack cost?

What does an AI SEO tool stack cost?

A DIY kit for a small to mid-size business stays modest: one keyword research tool, one AI visibility tracker, Brand24, and Surfer SEO. An agency-grade stack costs meaningfully more in tooling alone, which is one of the reasons agency programs are priced where they are. We scope the right kit for your situation on a quick call.

Do you build your own AI SEO tools?

Do you build your own AI SEO tools?

Yes, internally. We run custom GPTs for prompt simulation, internal dashboards that consolidate visibility and PR data, and scripted audits that check entity coverage at scale. We do not sell any of these as products. They are part of the agency engagement.

Is there one tool that does everything?

Is there one tool that does everything?

No, and any vendor claiming otherwise is selling. AI visibility tracking, brand mention monitoring, schema management, entity research, and content briefs are five distinct jobs and the best-in-class tool for each is rarely the same vendor.

Get the Right AI SEO Stack for Your Business

A 30-minute strategy call is the fastest way to scope the right AI SEO tool stack for your business. We come prepared with a live AI visibility test on your category, a quick read on the tools your closest competitors are likely running, and an honest opinion on whether a DIY stack or an agency program is the right call for where you are. Tools can only surface the signals a brand has already built. How AI systems weigh those signals when deciding who to recommend is the subject of Authority Engineering, the book by our founder Adam Chronister.
